I took on the voluntary task of constructing a highly durable mud kitchen that could withstand a lot of abuse from the local kids in a space that is open to the public at all hours. This mud kitchen wasn’t going to have delicate parts in the design – it had to be basic and large enough to accommodate classrooms full of kids when the local Schools visit. I took the opportunity to teach the other Gallatown volunteers to use a drill and help me build the back part of the kitchen before going it alone for the harder parts. The kitchen used recycled wood – a very old fence. The planks were thicker than the average fence wood so a couple of decades of weather wear didn’t stop me from using them to construct a very solid mud kitchen. I opted for bolts for their strength so that if there is any damage we won’t have screws creating a risk.
